For some surviving while others they knew and respected died can cause survivor guilt.
They may not feel okay being happy when others were not afforded the opportunity. Horrendously overwhelming circumstances of witnessing others dying, nearly dying themselves, killing another human being, and being scared blankless off/on for prolonged intervals could do it. It overwhelms the psyche of some.
