Is it safe to go snowboarding 5 months after getting a total hip replacement?

In brief: Increased risk

Snowboarding 5 months after hip replacement may not be the best idea.
The muscles around the hip are still healing. The bone around the prosthesis is still healing to the prosthesis. This puts you at increased risk for dislocation of the prosthesis or a fracture around the prosthesis. You need to have a discussion with the surgeon that did the replacement for a definitive answer.

If you have a hip resurfacing e.g. Birmingham then this might be reasonable, but down hill skiing, snow boarding, rock climbing, and water skiing put a total hip replacement at risk for dislocating or breaking. This is an artificial device done for pain relief. It will never functionally replace a normal hip which means you can't do all the things you could do with a normal hip. Do people do all these things with artificial joints? Sure, but they place themselves at risk. Revision for a failed hip replacement is associated with a higher risk of complications too. Don't change your lifestyle - have you considered taking up another sport like cycling?

In brief: No

Dislocation may always be a risk.
You will need to be evaluated by your orthopedic surgeon before participating in any sport.
