This is a normal secretion which lubricates and protects the outer ear canal.
In some cases too much is produced and in the elderly it frequently accumulates due to neglect. It will frequently come out in ordinary bathing with q-tip assist, but if it hardens it may require removal by your family doctor or an ENT doctor.
