In brief: Why is it high?

Normal TSH is usually less than 4 or 5.
A primary care doctor and/or an endocrinologist can help figure out why a TSH is high. It may mean that the thyroid gland is having problems and cannot make enough thyroid hormone. A higher TSH is a stronger command from the brain, urging the thyroid gland to work harder.
