In brief: Head pain

This needs checking by your doctor. Severe pain like this can be due to nerve pain (neuralgia) or inflammation of the vessels (temooral arteritis).
Other possible causes are migraine.

In brief: Persistent headache

There are many causes of unilateral headache.
Most common is simple muscle tension headache which usually responds to ibuprofen. If there is throbbing pain, nausea, and visual disturbances with light bothering your eyes, it is probably migraine. Other severe persistent unilateral headaches include paroxysmal hemicrania and cluster headache, or headache from increased intracranial pressure.
