Good day dr. My son is taking 4mg montiget (montelukast) for maintenance of his asthma. What would be the possible side effect if taken regularly.
Side effects. Montelukast is a non-steroid tablet used to treat asthma and allergies. While every medication has potential side effects, montelukast in general has few. Since it is not a steroid, there are no steroid type risks. A small percentage of patients develop mood changes, vivid dreams and occasionally suicidal-type thinking. Thank goodness this is unusual. Most kids do just fine.
Adverse effects. Here are some of the side effects from the medscape website. The most common side effect is headache. I've prescribed singulair (montelukast) often and have never had a patient have any side effects. Headache abdominal pain asthenia bronchitis cough dental pain diarrhea dizziness dyspepsia eczema incr lfts fever infectious gastroenteritis influenza laryngitis nasal congestion nausea otitis otic pain.
