In brief: Possible fracture.

It is possible to fracture a rib or just bruise it up pretty well.
Sometimes the pain can be severe. As long as you are not having any shortness of breath (excluding that due to sharp pain with inspiration) you will heal. There is no real benefit to having rib xrays as the treatment will be the same -avoid injuring it while it heals.

In brief: Likely from bruised

Ribs and nerve endings.
Taking otc nsaids and warm packs application may help. Follow up with your dr for reassurance esp if pain is worsening which may suggest rib fracture. Take care!
