My doctor is ordering an ultrasound of my liver -what all can an ultrasound detect?

Typically. The ultrasound will look at the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, right kidney, and the "great vessels" (aorta and inferior vena cava). Free fluid will be evaluated in the space between the liver and right kidney and an effort will be made to see if there is fluid surrounding the right lung.
US liver. Ultrasound (us) of the liver will allow the doctor to visualize the anatomy of the liver i.e. Size, contour and organ density. Us of the liver can rule out mass lesions (benign and malignant) and assess for fatty change. Doppler will allow visualization of the blood flow to the liver. Good luck.
