In brief: Changes in breathing

Good question. There are definite changes in breathing with metabolism. The most significant is when you have an acidosis, like with diabetes or after ingesting certain poisons.
This makes you breath real fast to try to get the acid out through your lungs. Other metabolic changes lead to reduced breathing--sedatives, tranquilizers, pain killers. If overdosed, these can lead to respiratory arrest.
