What does the amnio test detect? Can it guarantee my child will be normal?

In brief: Detection varies
Amniocentesis can obtain fetal cells for testing & that testing can look for hundreds of conditions.
Chromosome, aminoacid & organic acid studies are part of the list. Many of these studies are done at separate specialty labs throughout the country. Unless you are looking for something specific & the sample goes to that lab, no single lab will give you results to all or guarantee a normal kid.

Even a genetic microarray, technology that looks at smaller pieces of genetic material, can't rule out everything.

In brief: No guarantees
Amniocentesis can detect many abnormalities, depending on what you are looking for. Most commonly it will identify the chromosomal makeup of the fetus and measure alpha-fetoprotein (afp).
Abnormal chromosomes are found in down syndrome, and high AFP may indicate spina bifida. Even a normal amnio can never guarantee a normal baby as there are conditions that it cannot identify.
