What is the best alternative treatment for prostate cancer?

The best? Seriously, i would say, in general, avoid "alternative" therapy since it rejects everything we know. However, I am fully open-, minded for complementary therapy, treatment that may make conventional therapy better. More important, when dealing w/ pc, make sure you need any treatment. Pc is overdiagnosed and overtreated in the us and globally. See http://bit.Ly/kjwly4.
Castration. Medical (lupron) or surgical castration may be indicated in some as decreasing testosterone levels may help slow growth of tumor. Older men with small low grade prostate cancer do not always need aggressive treatments and may have better quality of life with this approach. Other alternative treatments are only supportive at best & should not replace conventional treatments. Consult an oncologist.
None. Unfortunately no alternative medicine treatment has proven to be effective in prostate cancer. There will always be case reports supporting various alternative therapies but there are no controlled studies with numerous patients to support therapy like with standard treatments. Active surveillance is likely better than unsupported treatment.

Different opinions. Every doctor has a different opinion on this. Different options have different side effects and risks. Depending on the patients age, extent of cancer and features of the cancer patients choose between observation, surgery and radiation in the form of external machines or internal seed implants. Many options. Generally speaking, options for treatment depend on patient factors (general health, preferences) and tumor factors (gleason grade, psa, clinical stage). Options include surveillance, radiotherapy, surgical removal of prostate. Radiation can be done with seeds in appropriate patients, external beam (usually imrt) with image guidance (igrt). An emerging radiation tool is radiosurgery. Read more...

Prostate cancer- what are the best diagmostic tool- biopsi/mri/serology -psa values? What is the best treatment option? Male 64- obese- high bp

Prostate ca. If there's a suspicion of prostate cancer, the first step is to do digital rectal exam and psa. If both or any of those are elevated/suspicious for a malignant tumor, the next step is biopsy. Mri doesn't play a major rôle in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. It may be used later when the diagnosis of cancer is established to check for possible spread. Treatment depends on stage/aggressiveness. Read more...
Biopsy. A biopsy should be done but if the psa is very high, > 100 unlikely anything else. A biopsy will give tissue diagnosis, grade of the tumor, and help the physician decide on therapy. Hope this helps. Read more...

Is proton therapy the best radiation solution for prostate cancer.?

Not clear at all. This is a relatively new approach to target the prostate gland in a different way. A new kind of mouse trap. There is currently insufficient data to say that it is better than other treatments for prostate ca. It is only done at a few centers because of the equipment expense. The future of the field is a genomic test in development that hopefully will detemine if any treatment is appropriate. Read more...
Slightly better edge. Proton radiation has a better advantage than traditional radiation, it causes less complications, proton mass with positive charge will not pass beyond the tumor, precise high is delivered at the tumor. Proton generators are very expensive, available centers are limited. Read more...
Complex question. This is highly debated at present. If every option cost the same, it might be the best external beam option. Data questioning it recently are retrospective, based on 65yo+ data sets, and cost biased. That being said, one can get great surgery (and bad), great imrt (and bad) and great observation (and bad). The best treatment is unique to a person's situation (and their teams experience). Read more...

Radiation. Just to clarify gamma knife is typically used in the head and neck region. Other radiation techniques such as stereotactic body radiation can be used to treat areas such as the prostate.
