Are heart murmurs usually congenital? What are some common defects that occur along with it?

In brief: Murmurs
A murmur simply means that blood can be heard flowing through the heart.
A murmur is a physical exam finding, and can occur in normal hearts (in fact many children with normal hearts have murmurs). Common congenital heart defects that have murmurs include asds, vsd, and valve stenosis (specifically pulmonary valve). There are many defects so please discuss this with your physician if concerned.

Pathology
In brief: Valve problems
Heart murmurs are usually due to defect in valves or abnormal blood flow.
These may be due to congenital lesions, however, many acquired causes, e.g., rheumatic disease, calcific aortic stenosis, mitral valve prolapse, severe anemia etc.
