Dental filling during pregnancy, is it safe?

In brief: Pregnancy Filling

The first question i would have for you is how necessary is the filling to be done right now .
2nd- can it wait until after delivery? If there are no consequences for waiting putting it off a few months might be a better choice. Yes a filling can be done safely at any stage of your pregnancy but unless there are compelling reasons to do it now, why not wait until your pregnancy is a non-issue?

In brief: Yes

You should keep up with dental health, and that includes during pregnancy.
Lidocaine and prilocaine are two local anesthetics with good evidence of safety during pregnancy. Others may also be safe but there is not yet as much evidence for that. If you're in the first trimester and your dentist is ok with it, you might want to wait until you're in the second trimester, but listen to your dentist.

In brief: Second trimester

Is best.
Although consult with your obgyn and your dentist to weigh out the risk/benefit of doing fillings while you are pregnant.

Yes, fillings are safe during pregnancy. Inform your dentist that you are pregnant so the appropriate anesthetic can be administered.

Unless your pregnancy is a fragile and your in your third trimester. Most dental care during pregnancy should be limited to emergency treatment or treatment that can't wait until you have your baby.
However, with that said the risk is usually minimal to the baby.

In brief: Typically , yes

Usually no problem. Risk is anesthesia passing the placental barrier. Best in second trimester. Can use anesthesia without epinephrine.
Talk to your dentist about this. Good luck.

I'd not recommend the amalgam type filling during pregnancy or while breast feeding. 51-54% mercury and there is some exposure to it. If u need the filling and it can't wait I'd opt for the tooth colored variety filling.

There is so much mis- information and fear regarding dental care and pregnancy.
Most dental procedures can be done safely during a normal pregnancy. If you have doubts, talk to your ob/gyn and your dentist!
