In brief: Varies

Depends on location and color of scar. If it is flat topical retinoids such as retin a (tretinoin) will slowly lighten color. If they are raised scars a pulse dye laser can flatten the scars.
Depressed scars respond to fractionated co2 or erbium

In brief: Improve not rid

Unfortunately, scars are permanent.
They can usually be improved, however, so that they are much less visible. A good first step is vigorous massage twice a day with cocoa butter, vitamin E or mederma. Sometimes, surgical revision can help, say by removing multiple scars and leaving only one in their place. Good luck!
