How do a dentist and an oral surgeon differ?

Training. Both go to 4 years of dental school. An oral surgeon then goes for several years of additional training in tooth extraction and oral facial surgery. An oral surgeon would not place fillings or crowns and perform routine preventive dental care. Most general dentists would not place implants or extract impacted teeth.
Extra training. Oral surgery is a 4 or more year residency training after dental school.
Dental Specialist. An oral surgeon is a dentist who has limited their scope of practice to oral and maxillofacial surgery. They are dental specialists who have 3-5 years of extra training beyond dental school.
Dentist vs oral sur. An oral surgeon is a specialized dentist in oral surgery.
