In brief: 3 ways

There are 3 ways that bacteria invade and infect the urinary tract, ascending, hematogenous and lymphatic spread.
Ascending means bacteria ascend the urethra into the bladder. Hematogenous spread is when bacteria in the blood stream seed into the kidney tissue. Lymphatic spread is one way bacteria can get from the bladder into the kidney. The other is up the ureter.
