In brief: Mouth virus

There are many viral infections that can cause blisters or ulcerations in the mouth.
The vast majority will resolve without prescription medication but they do tend to cause quite a bit of pain. If your child is a newborn, it is wise to see your doctor. Acetaminophen is helpful for pain (or Ibuprofen over 6 months of age). Encourage him to drink lots of fluids to prevent dehydration.

In brief: Viral Infection

These are usually symptoms of a viral infection commonly called herpangina or hand/foot/ mouth disease.
If your pediatrician diagnoses this condition, treatment is supportive and includes acetaminophen, topical pain relief and making sure your child is drinking plenty of fluids until the illness runs its course.
