What other infections cause rashes on skin and red bumps in face besides chicken pox. My son is 4?

Viruses, mostly. Viral rashes are common in kids; chicken pox is the most popular, but just about any virus can cause a rash. Other possibilities include allergic reactions to medications or food additives, contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, and other things. It's impossible to make a precise diagnosis without seeing the rash, so you should consult a dermatologist, especially if your son is running a fever. Read more...

Can you tell me if I have just been exposed to the chicken pox, can I get a vaccine now to prevent breaking out in the rashes?

Depends on variables. If you had it as a kid or were immunized (started mid 90's) you have little to worry about.A vaccination now would not stop the progression of the illness or treat it. If susceptible, you can count forward 10-21 days from exposure as the time you would break out. Oral meds could be helpful if you do. Those at high risk due to chemo/cancer can sometimes obtain vzig (immune globulin) to prevent it. Read more...

What would cause this shingles rash if you are obviously immune to chicken pox because you babysat kids with it last month?

Shingles. Shingles is a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, a type of herpes virus that causes chickenpox. After you have had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in your nerve roots and remains inactive until, in some people, it flares up again. When the virus becomes active again, you get shingles instead of chickenpox. Read more...

Can you get chicken pox if been vacenated already? If so what are signs of chicken pox? How to know it's not just rash? On methotrexate for jra

Depends. In the ideal situation, a chicken pox vaccine would fully protect you from chicken pox. For a vaccine to work, however, a functional immune system is necessary and a patient with jra on mtx may not respond to a vaccine normally. Probably the more likely explanation, however, is it is something else. Consider being seen by your md or a dermatologist where they could look and tell you the cause. Read more...
Yes but less likely. Anyone who has had the chicken pox vaccine can still get chicken pox. It may be much milder though. Also, some people don't respond to the chicken pox vaccine for a variety of reasons so the only way to know is to get chicken pox immunoglobulin levels checked. Any kids who are on Methotrexate for jia/jra can fight off chicken pox, but kids on Enbrel humira, or Remicade (infliximab) can get very sick--call doc. Read more...
