In brief: Could be shingles

Pins and needles pain is common in the early stage of shingles, caused by varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox usually in childhood, stays in your sensory nerve roots, and reactivated later in life.
You may have the pain before you break out in blisters. Please go get evaluated by a physician.

In brief: Notalgia

If the pins and needles sensation is in the upper back (around the shoulder blades) consider 1) dry skin 2) a benign disorder called notalagia paresthetica 3) early shingles - herpes zoster outbreak (chicken pox virus in the nerves - you may see chicken pox skin changes and it might be painful) and less likely arthritis in the upper back bones.
