In brief: Varies ?6-12 months
It is more important to burp very young infants as they have trouble doing it themselves.
Once they get a bit older, sometimes as early as 6 months, they can burp well on their own. That would be when you can stop burping them.

when the babies start moving , which could be as young as 6 mo, they generally do not need to be burped so frequently as the movement can burp them .

Most infants can burp without help at three to four months of age.

In brief: When not neeeded
Burping is done to decrease stomach upset from excessive gas.
Newborns may need burping every 1/2-1 oz, older babies only after the feeding. Some babies never need burped, others may need it for months. If baby is fussy, spitty, try burping. If you don't burp and he isn't in distress, no further burping is required.
