In brief: Tonsillitis

Sore, swollen tonsils likely represent a viral or bacterial infection or chronic tonsillitis with tonsil stone (tonsillolith) formation.
Patients with this symptom need to be evaluated to determine if there is a streptococcal infection (strep throat) requiring antibiotics or a different cause for their symptoms.

tonsil stones can be treated with manual removal with Q-tip, water-pik, etc or surgery if severe and persistent

In brief: Tonsillitis

It is likely you have recurrent acute tonsillitis.
This is a viral/bacterial infection of the tonsil tissues on the side of the back of your throat. In the normal healthy state, these tissues represent the first line of defense against bacteria and or viruses coming into your mouth from the outside. However, after frequent infections and your age, they cease to perform their normal function.
