This also sounds suspicious for a meniscal / cartilage tear. This should be evaluated further, especially if she's having episodes of the knee locking up (can't flex or extend the knee, often followed by a painful popping with resumption of ability to flex / extend the knee) or giving way (where the knee just gives out with weight bearing).
