In brief: The risk is surgery
Surgery without anesthesia is very dangerous with death from pain and shock.
Anesthesia prevents the side effects of surgery. I have done 42000 cases, no death, mi, comas, recall. , stroke. Most frequent serious problems 16 broken teeth, 2 nerve damages, 22 inhaling vomits giving 3 pneumonias. Recover to responsive 5 mintues, awake 15 minutes, allert 30 minutes.Dr r refers to post op pain/other meds.

In brief: There are risks
Anesthesia always carries some risk, which varies by type of anesthesia, duration needed, and the patient's health.
Most surgical anesthesia is relatively short-acting and if desired awakening can occur shortly after the procedure. Prior to any procedure, the anesthesiologist & surgeon should discuss the specific risks of both the procedure and the anesthesia with the patient/family.

To answer your question precisely, we need to know a lot of information about the patient's health and the type of surgery that is planned.

In brief: Very low risk
Anesthesia is very safe when performed by trained anesthetists.
Just like anything, there are always risks, but they are very minimal with today's medicine. The common risks are sore throat, pain, and nausea. Rare risks are dental damage, recall, heart and lung complications, and death. You will recover most of the day following general anesthesia, but should be close to normal the next day.

In brief: It is very safe
The risk of general anesthesia (ga) is less than that of driving to the hospital to have the operation.
Ga is thought to have a risk of death of one in 350, 000 cases or more. Advances in monitoring, medical training, drugs and support have greatly decreased the risk. The main concerns after ga are usually nausea and vomiting post op. The effects of anesthesia wear off within 24 hours.
