In brief: ?age?
The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrences, smoke & other irritants.
Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion & produces rattling with breathing & cough. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & suctioning the remainder. Eliminate irritants from babies environment & this will happen less.

In brief: A cold?
Babies get colds just like children.
However, because their airways are smaller, you have to watch them closer. For fevers in infants <3 mo, let your doc know. For older babies who do not have fevers and are eating & peeing, normally, try some nasal saline. A squirt up each nostril with each diaper change may help a good bit. Light nasal suctioning with a bulb may help, but only the outside!

In brief: URI
Babies get colds just like everyone else.
Up to 6 colds in a year is not uncommon. This helps build immune system and help fight infections later in life. If your baby is <3 months old and has a true fever of greater than 100.5 degrees, or not acting well see the doctor immediately. Use a cool mist humidifier without any medications . Normal saline nasal drops as needed..
