What is the surgery for crainiosynistosis like?

Common & significant. Craniosynostosis surgery is among the more commonly performed pediatric neurosurgical procedures. Depending of the age of the child, there is a growing trend toward endoscopic repair of craniosynostosis. Endoscopic repair is less invasive, has a lower incidence of transfusion, and a smaller scar. However, it is often difficult to get as complete a cosmetic repair endoscopically.
Open Treatment. Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of 1 or more of the joints between the bone plates of the skull. The surgery involves removing of the deformed bone, reshaping & replacing the bone during the first year of life.Incision is made over the top of the head from ear to ear, remove the bone , reshape &secure it with dissolving plates & screws.A 3-6 day hospital stay w overnight in the pediatric icu.
Depends on approach. The procedure varies with the location of the defect and training & preference of the surgeon. An open approach peals back scalp, separates the fused area & treats the edges so they don't knit up again too soon. The scalp is repositioned & closed. Some surgeons do a closed approach thru an endoscope tube inserted under the scalp. The bleeding & recovery time seem less if the closed approach is posibl.
Very specialized. Skilled surgeons separate the skull bones that fused together too early. The surgeons treat the edges of the skull bones so that they don't fuse together until later, to allow the patient's head to grow symmetrically in the way a normal skull sould grow. In order to get to the skull bones, the surgeons lifted back the scalp. At the end of the surgery, the scalp is flipped back over the bones.
