In brief: Metamucil
The active ingredient in Metamucil is psyllium husk, a natural plant fiber that is a great source of soluble and insoluble fiber.

Natural sources of high fiber such as fruits, many veggies, whole grain rice and wheat products also have nutritious vitamins without too many calories. Exercise helps stimulate the bowel and has many other benefits besides easing constipation and it burns calories in the process.

In brief: Fiber Facts
Any natural source of fiber from food, such as your favorite fruits and vegetables, is preferred over a store bought supplement.
This is because you get so much more enjoyment and benefit from the food rather than a store bought processed product. Having said that, most products bought at the store are soluble fiber products. Insoluble fiber comes primarily from non-digestible food components.

In brief: Food.
It's always better to get fiber from natural food sources - fruits, vegetables, whole grains, breakfast cereals.
35 grams daily for women, 50 grams for men. Supplements can help you reach your daily goal, but shouldn't be your only source.

In brief: Psyllium
Psillium is what is found in metamucil and many other products.
Be careful about fibre products with inulin because they can make you very gassy. Oatmeal is also a good fiber source.
