In brief: Inflamed Gingiva

Hard to determine what the cause of the irritation is.
.. impacted food, trauma from your "picking", or a carious lesion full of food and bacteria that is irritating the adjacent tissue. If you have not seen a dentist within the last six months for an exam, now is the time to make the appointment.

In brief: Pernicious habit

Yes, please see Dentist immediately.
The area has to be examined to determine if your picking at it is a damaging habit or a response to localized stimulus (gum disease, tarter accumulation, cavity, etc.) So please see your Dentist to find out what's going on and what should be done in the way of treatment. And keep your fingers out of your mouth except when properly cleaning your teeth/gums.
