In brief: Re-infection?

If bacterial vaginosis keeps returning, a woman may be getting re-infected by her partner. Both persons should consider getting examined and treated at the same time.
A woman might recover better if she keeps semen out of her vagina for a while, to allow her vagina to naturally self-clean and return to normal. That means using condoms.

In brief: Common

Recurrences of BV are common.
About 30% of treated patients have a recurrence within 3 mos, and >50% within 12 mos. No one knows why for sure, though it is likely because the original treatment missed some harmful bacteria, or could not fully reestablish the "good", protective bacteria. Your dr may give you more antibiotics, with or without boric acid, to cure the infection & prevent future ones.
