What does a discharge from my baby’s ear mean?

Ear infection. If you see a discharge from your baby's ear, there may be an infection in the ear. It could be an external ear canal infection (otitis externa). There might be a hidden object stuck in the canal. Sometimes a middle ear infection (acute otitis media) can cause drainage from the ear if there's a small hole in the eardrum.
Possible Infection. Although drainage in the ear could be earwax or milk or drool that has somehow found its way into the ear, an exam is recommended to rule out an ear infection.
