In brief: Hip pain

There are many reasons for hip pain.
It can be tendinitis, arthritis, stress fracture, muscle strain or tear. You can also get referred pain from a lumbar disc or an abdominal problem.

It can also be nerve entrapments -- it just depends what your feeling and where the pain is located and what is found on examination. A physician trained in musculoskeletal ultrasound can evaluate all of these things in his/her office.

In brief: Many causes

Depends on age and symptoms.
Hip joint pain is usually groin pain. Pain with motion or twisting can give concern to things like a labral tear of the hip. There is also something called fai or femoral acetabular impingement. History, physical and a simple x-ray to check for arthritis. Start with nsaid's, physical therapy and re-assess. A guided injection can be considered if no improvement.
