Thyroid gland. The thyroid is a endocrine gland that makes thyroid hormone. This hormone in children is necessary for growth and developing. In adults, it regulates metabolism. Low thyroid levels cause fatigue, weight gain, constipation and irregular menses. Too much thyroid hormone cause weight loss and palpitations. Thyroid nodules are cancer in about 5% of the time. Often there are no symptoms from nodules.
