Bipolar is caused by what?

Parental expectation. In addition to the "genetic" component and imbalanced chemicals in the brain, some bipolar patients had parents who had unrealistic expectations of them and "broke their hearts" by appearing to love them more for what they could accomplish than for who they were. "conditional love" hurts and sometimes the price paid by the often talented child will be difficulty following through on "achieving.".
Many factors. No single factor has been identified to cause bipolar disorder but a lot of factors may contribute. A family history of mood or psychotic disorder associated with psychological and social stressors may be triggers. Drugs and other substance use may initiate or worsen the disorder.
More Than One Cause. Bipolar disorder may have different causes in different individuals. Genetics, environmental influences, structural abnormalities and functional abnormalities the brain have all been linked to this disorder. "a chemical imbalance" is often used to describe a functional problem. Some believe that a series of stressful events, known as "kindling theory", can cause dramatic mood changes in some.
Chemical imbalance. Presumably a chemical imbalance in the brain. Has some familial tendencies.

Bipolar what causes bipolar in people? Can it be because of some dramatic experience in the past like being raped by family members?

I . I agree with dr. Bunt's comments. If there is a predisposition for bipolar disorder, traumatic events may provoke the full expression of the disorder. The impact of trauma can be accumulative. I hope you have sought out help. Read more...
1) . 1) in layman's terms, it comes from a "chemical imbalance", which is to say that those who develop it are generally thought to have have been born with an underlying structural abnormality in the brain, which eventually produces the "chemical imbalance"... Or not. 2) the short answer is "no"... At least not bipolar disorder, per se. But that said, it is believed that the initial episode of mania can sometimes be "precipitated", at least in part, by severe stress. So, the thinking is that it was already there, under the surface, waiting to be brought out... Which begs the question: "if there was never any severe stress in that person's life, would the bipolar d/o ever have surfaced?" no one can say for sure. There are also a number of psychiatric conditions some which may be considered as purely "psychodynamic" in origin (i.e. "created", in major part, by the patient's environment and experiences), and others that might be considered genetically based (e.g. Adult adhd), and even some purely medical ones, for that matter (e.g. Hyperthyroidism), which may manifest as mood changes, mood swings, and/or mood instability. Any of these conditions may be (erroneously) diagnosed as "primary" bipolar d/o, if they are not picked up by the initial assessment, but i think most of us would argue that bipolar d/o, per se, is not just meant to superficially describe a constellation of mood symptoms, or else what would be the clinical purpose of calling it a "diagnosis". A diagnosis should ideally identify a spectrum of conditions which are closely enough related that they might be predicted to respond to the same general treatment, i would tend to think.... (but that may be for another discussion). Read more...
