In brief: Depends on the cause
The majority of patients who i see with "ear pain" really have pain around the ear. The structures responsible are the jaw joint and jaw muscles.
Clenching, grinding, chewing on one side over the other all lead to pain and discomfort. Soft diet, antiinflammatories, ice and a dental evaluation are indicated. Stop chewing gum or crunching ice.
