Treating bipolar. If Tegretol and Lamictal are working well to control your bipolar symptoms, then this is a good combo for you. Tegretol shouldn't affect your sugar and is safe enough, if it's working. Your doc will check your liver enzymes and blood counts every few months. Lamictal is an. Excellent medication. However, it takes a while to get the dose up to therapeutic so it isn't the drug to use to treat an acute episode of mania. Good medicine. In my practice, i regularly prescribe both topiramate and lamotrigene for bipolar disorder. I have found each to be very effective when taken at full, therapeutic doses. Ask your Dr. There can be different strategies in weaning off medications and it can be very specific to the individual. Your Dr is the best person to give this advice, and should give you specific instructions on how quickly to era off the meds.
