In brief: Most do on their own

Most herniated disks heal on their own, but is may take 3 to 6 months.
Only 2% or so will go on to surgery. Sometimes injections will reduce symptoms to the point that surgery is not necessary. Try to live as normal as possible, avoiding uncomfortable positions and activities. It is probably best to avoid heavy lifting, bending, twisting for about a month. Otherwise, stay active.

In brief: Depends

If you've done the physical therapy and no relief, then injections like epidural steroid injections or facet joint injections may be the next treatment options.
There is growing evidence that stem cell therapies can also be helpful and heal tissues but are not covered by insurance at this time.

In brief: Can't heal them

The things you can do to help your herniated disks are to not smoke, keep your weight down, exercise daily, and maintain flexibility with strong core muscles.
