In brief: Thrush

The yeast that causes thrush is present in the environment as a microscopic spore.
It is acquired by everyone at some point and becomes a normal member of the germs in your poop. Kids often acquire it simply off their contaminated fingers, that spend a lot of time in their mouth. Infants get it in their mouth easily because it thrives on the sugar of a feed & they feed often.

In brief: Thrush/yeast infect

As long as the mom washes her hands there is no way to potentially transfer a vaginal yeast infection to a breastfeeding baby.
While they are both caused by yeast - to cause thrush the organisms would physically get from the vagina into the baby's mouth. A very UNLIKELY situation.
