My son has dark red spots on his upper soft pallet on the inside of his mouth. Is this just part of a normal virus which will go away with time or something more serious?

In brief: That depends

First, does he have other symptoms of a virus or sore throat? If not, then it is likely something else.
Petechiae (small red spots) on the palate can be caused by several things including: asthma inhaler, sucking or chewing habit, vomiting, Anemia, and sexual abuse. If they don't resolve within a week or worsen he should be seen by his pediatrician.
