In brief: OTC

Since most colds are viral, your best bet is to figure out which of the symptoms of the cold bother you most and go for the best otc medicine that can help you out with that.
If not sure, stop by and ask the pharmacist they can usually give pretty good direction. Along with that, patients should get plenty of hydration and dont over exert themselves.

OTC = over the counter (I'm sure most people know that, but just in case...)

In brief: Prevention

There is no effective treatment for viral colds.
Your best bet is to take preventive measures, frequent hand washing being the easiest and most effective. Avoiding crowded places and contact with people with colds would limit your exposure to the virus.
