In brief: Diagnosis of

cancer would be made by getting a biopsy of the lesion and then having it checked by a pathologist.
Often cysts or infections may extrude pus or similar material.

In brief: Exam

Your doctor can give you a better idea as to whether it is cancer or not.
However the presence of pus tends to indicate infection although tissue breakdown in a rapidly growing cancer may rarely simulate pus. The older you are, the longer the lesion being present, the more likely the lesion is cancerous.
