In brief: Depends on severity

Tonsillitis is usually a viral or bacterial infecion of the tonsils.
IN most cases, it settles without ANY treatment (although is is painful and uncomfortable). However, in a small set of cases, it can complicate and cause serious morbidity.
If you have a mild case of sore throat, it might be sufficient to use an oral rinse such as Andolex C, and pain killers like Paracetamol. If worse, see an ENT

In brief: Comfort care

Many find menthol containing materials like gum or candies helpful.
Gargling with a salty brine often strips the excess debris of the tonsil & membrane surfaces & remove some of the smell. No home remedy will kill the germ but several help you live with it.
