What causes cysts on the liver?

Usually unknown. The cause of most liver cysts is unknown. Liver cysts can be start at birth (such as in the rare disorder Polycystic Liver Disease) or can develop at a later time. They usually grow slowly and are not detected until adulthood. In some foreign countries, there is a parasite called echinococcus that can cause liver cysts.
