In brief: 100 Day Cough
Whooping cough is an infection caused by the b.
Pertussis bacteria. It may cause a severe cough characterized by a loud "whooping" sound, although not always. In infants severe respiratory problems may lead to death. When treated with antibiotics, the cough still lasts about 100 days. Most cases are preventable by immunizing. So the vaccine is best.

In brief: Pertussis
A godawful disease that was once part of almost every childhood.
Before antibiotics and immunizations, expect 4-8 weeks of constant coughing, so bad one must "whoop" to get in enough air between coughs. Children choked to death or died of ruptured veins in the brain. It's still very much around, kills youngsters and can affect adults whose immunizations have worn off.
