In brief: Sick sinus

Sick sinus syndrome refers to pathology of the sinus node of the heart which is the natural pacemaker that regulates heart rate.
When this node malfunctions the heart rate can become abnormally slow or actually paradoxically lead to atrial dysrhythmias causing very rapid rhythm abnormalities such as atrial fibrillation. Occasionally patients go back and forth from too slow to rapid rhythms.
