In brief: Chronic IS Acute.

Chronic pancreatitis is actually a misnomer. It is repeated bouts of acute pancreatitis (acute pancreatitis episodes one after the other = chronic pancreatitis).
If the first attack of pancreatitis provoked (alcohol, gallstone), & the cause is not addressed, then the 1st bout of acute pancreatitis can turn into chronic pancreatitis very quickly.
