Overdue for 5 yr follow-up for pituitary surgery from 2007. Also have chronic sinusitis. Can ENT order MRI instead of CT scan? Seems like same area.

No. They are two. completely different studies. A sinus CT scan will not adequately evaluate the pituitary region, and a pituitary MRI will not adequately evaluate the sinus region. Although each may provide some anatomic coverage of the other area, CT soft tissue contrast resolution(needed for pituitary evaluation) is vastly inferior to MRI, and MRI bone resolution(needed for sinus evaluation) is inferior to CT. You may need both. MRI will definitely visualize the sinuses, but may overestimate degree of inflammation. MRI shows bone very poorly and bony anatomy is important in evaluating the sinuses. MRI is definitely the best study to follow the pituitary, so you may ultimately need both studies. Read more...
