The HIV test will usually be positive within a month of exposure, even though some are more sensitive than others.
That said, there are other types of exposure that can lead to HIV infection (blood/body fluids, injections). The HIV test is simple enough. I would test for several types of mononucleosis among other things, and that includes HIV, even without recall of a recent HIV exposure.
