When I stand for any period of time (< 1 hour), I get large, red, itchy raised blotches on my legs and ankles, similar to hives. How to prevent this??

Hives. This could be a form of pressure urticaria (hives caused by pressure). Try taking long-acting non-sedating antihistamine like zyrtec or allegra once a day and see if symptoms subside.
