I am experiencing a sore throat when swallowing foods, headache, chills, and feeling unwell what could it be?

Doctor can examine. New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat illness is bothersome (as in this case), recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can help decrease pain.

See a doctor. You are sick and need to be evaluated and get treatment. It sounds like it's worse than the usual cold virus. It could be strep throat or mono. There are quick tests for both. You need to drink a lot of fluids, so if you cannot swallow, you may become dehydrated and need some IV fluids. See someone today. Read more...

I have been feeling cold and I have a sore throat and a headache. Should I go to the drs.?

Doctor can evaluate. Nose and throat symptoms can be from cold viruses, strep throat, influenza, allergies, irritants, etc... It can be difficult to tell what the cause is. If symptoms lasted only 1 or 2 days, it was more likely allergies or irritation. Doctors have rapid tests for strep and influenza, so a primary care doctor can diagnose strep and start antibiotics within the first few days of strep symptoms. Read more...

Yes but... Analgesic/antipyretics include acetaminophen (Tylenol), aspirin and other anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen. They will likely help you feel better. Sounds like you may have a virus, but if you haven't started improving after a week, you should probably see a doctor. Read more...
