In brief: Neck pain

If the pain arises in the back of the neck and radiates upward into the scalp, a pinched or inflamed occipital nerve is likely.
If pain and tenderness is on the side of the neck, inflammation of the lymph glands, thyroid gland, or carotid artery are possibilities. If symptoms persist see your physician for evaluation and neck xrays and/or referral to a neurologist may be ordered.
