Physiological splint. Important to consider whether or not the onset was sudden, possibly after an injury, or slow increasing over time. Also is there an increased temperature or color change to the ankle area. The swelling is actually a physiological cast applied by your body when decreased mobility is called for. Post traumatic pain. There are many possibilities. One of the main ones to consider is fracture after your fall. Other considerations include soft tissue injury (tendons and ligaments) and osteochondral lesions (usually of the talus).
